Most of us believe ourselves to be competent, safe drivers. However, if many years have gone by since you passed your driving test and received your license, you may have picked up some bad habits that could be making you more hazardous on the road than you realise. Make sure you’re keeping yourself, your family, and others safe with these important driving tips. Some may seem obvious – but a reminder could save your life.

  1. Keep your visibility clear
While a small chip in your windscreen might not seem like a big deal, it can actually cause huge problems and be a major safety concern, One small chip can easily shatter and cause serious injury to you, other passengers in the car, and other drivers and vehicles on the road. Cracks and chips in your windshield also limit your visibility, making it more difficult to be aware of what’s going on around you. If you encounter unexpected windshield damage while you’re driving, you can always call in mobile windscreen repair central coast to sort the problem out quickly and easily.
  2. Make sure your car is serviced and in good condition
You may think that riding around with a few seemingly small problems with your car isn’t a cause for concern. Unfortunately, while you may not want to call your insurance company up anytime soon, keeping your car in good condition is one of the best ways you can ensure that you’re safe on the road. Getting your car serviced or repaired regularly so you know if there are any issues is a great way to make sure that any potentially accident-causing breakdowns are avoided well in advance.
  3. Stay away from the wheel on the morning after
We all know not to get behind the wheel of the car after a few drinks, right? Let’s assume that’s common knowledge. What many people don’t realise, however, is that driving when you’re hungover can also be dangerous, and can get you in serious legal trouble. Plenty of drunk drivers are caught and arrested in the early hours of the morning and even up until midday because the alcohol they consumed the night before is still in their system.
  4. Switch your lights on whenever necessary
Too many people are shy about switching their headlights on when it’s not deep in the dead of night. In reality, turning your lights on improves your visibility in a wide range of conditions, from rainy or foggy days to dusk when you may not be seeing as clearly as you think. Turn your lights on whenever there’s a chance that you may not be seen clearly by other drivers – including on rural roads with plenty of corners where drivers might not expect to see you coming.
  5. Stay near your car if you break down
If something goes wrong with your vehicle and you find yourself stuck on the side of the road, resist the urge to go charging off to look for help. Straying away from your car could put you in danger – particularly when the weather is especially hot or cold, or if a storm or unusual weather conditions are about to hit. Stay near your car so you’re protected from the elements and call the local emergency services for help, instead.
